My visit to Mossy Lea June 2024

Spending time with the children, especially with the youngest ones, revealed a beautifully prepared session. This particular session was led by the teaching assistant (TA) and thoughtfully planned by our Head of School. The TA showed a clear grasp of the core concepts, introducing essential vocabulary and using probing questions that prompted children to think about what they had learned, rather than just recalling activities. Even our littlest ones could distinguish between evergreen and deciduous trees and proudly name the parts of a tree, demonstrating their new knowledge. Throughout, they were encouraged to articulate their thoughts with confidence.

Moving to KS2, the children were eager to share their recent learning about the earth's shape and our planetary neighbors. When asked, they could name planets in relation to the sun, with great excitement as they created mnemonics to remember the order! Their engagement peaked as they learned about rocky versus gas planets and the vast distances between them. One child, full of excitement, commented, “I really like this lesson, and I won’t forget what I have learnt today.”

Before wrapping up, each child had a chance to write down their new knowledge and ask questions. One child was curious about Mars and its lack of water – a testament to the thoughtful learning environment that fosters curiosity and mutual support. The session concluded with a quiz on the iPads, a fun way for them to consolidate their understanding and a wonderful example of children learning in an atmosphere of respect and enthusiasm for discovery.

This learning snapshot is a delightful example of how we nurture curiosity and build knowledge, step by step, encouraging each child to think and explore.
